I can't believe little Theo is already almost eight weeks old! Everyone says time goes by so quickly, and they are right. I thought it was time to share all of the details of Theo's nursery. I love the serenity of this room. Although Theo does not yet sleep here, he started taking naps in his crib over the past few weeks. And we sit in here every day and rock and sing and are beginning to read some of the books together. It feels like a beautiful, peaceful retreat for our sweet baby boy.
As soon as we found out we were pregnant, I started saving pictures to a design board, filling it with nursery ideas. Since we didn't know whether Theo was going to be a boy or a girl, we went with a very neutral color palette of soft ivory and gray, with the thought that once we got to know our little addition, we would add in colors and details to match his or her personality. In this room, Theo will grow from baby to toddler to little boy. I still can hardly believe this sweet little human being is ours.
The nursery has a loose exploration theme, but by keeping the decor simple, we can add to it or change it as Theo gets older. The items we chose have a lot of meaning, and every item in the room tells a story.
My great-grandmother made the dresses hanging on the side of the crib for her children. She was a talented seamstress and we have several quilts and other linens she created. The bunny sitting in the crib was made from a quilt pieced by my other great-grandmother. I didn't get the sewing gene, unfortunately, but I feel lucky to have these family heirlooms.
Theo has several quilts and blankets made and gifted to him by family or friends, all of which are absolute treasures. This little doll, below, was made by our friend, Becky, out of the shirt I was wearing when Elie proposed to me. She also made a matching quilt.
Hanging over the changing dresser is a picture of Elie and me, when I was six months pregnant with Theo.
I replaced the knobs on the dresser with whimsical birds purchased on Easy, both symbolic of flight and exploration and because Elie loves birds. The little fur booties were a gift from our dear friends, McKenzie and Evan, who brought them back from Peru. I found the "See the World" poster at a local vintage shop, and I had it custom framed to match the nursery.
The books lining the wall beside the crib are all my favorite books from when I was a little girl. For some reason, I carted them around with me all these years, from move to move. I just couldn't bear to part with them, because I had so many wonderful memories of crawling into bed at night and reading these stories, over and over. They are such a treasure to have.
The books and stuffed animals in the gray bins on the floor are all ones given to us by friends and family, and many of the books have notes of encouragement or advice. I also found alphabet blocks featuring the Hebrew alphabet, both a nod to Elie's heritage and a practical tool for if or when Theo learns Hebrew.
As Theo grows, I'll show the changes we make to his room, to match his personality. But, I'm in no hurry. We're still just soaking him in.
